TNG uses "Known as" (also "Also Known As" or "AKA" or "Alias" in genealogy software programs) in a person's file to indicate alternative or additional names to those shown.

  1. It may be helpful to know that a person is commonly known by their middle name or by an abbreviation/contraction of their name. (Common abbreviations for the first name are not usually noted.)
  2. Some of the kings and dukes are given an "appellation" like "the Conqueror" and this may be found in the Known As field.
  3. And there are some people whose precise name (first/given or last/surname) is uncertain and the alternatives are placed in the Known As field.

Examples:

  • Kenneth George Roy was known by his middle name and is therefore Known As "George".
  • Marilyn Margaret Roy is known by a name not discernible from either of her given names and is Known As "Mandie".
  • There is no entry in this field for Bruce Edward Roy - you can assume he is known as Bruce.
  • Samuel Arthur Manning Roy is known as Sam, but, being a common and not unexpected abbreviation, no entry to this effect is made in the Known As field.
  • Robert I Duke of Normandy has in the Known As field "Appellation 'The Magnificent'"
  • Turstain le Goz has alternative spellings for his name and the Known As field has "or Thurstan or Toustain"
  • Elizabeth Patnal's last name may have been Petchel and this is noted in the Known As field.
