By core functions I mean the five buttons that appear immediately below the heading on most pages. They vary depending on what sort of page you are on:

 |
Home takes you to the Roy~Royes Link Family Links home page. (From there you can select Generations to get to the site home page, with access to other sites. You will rarely need to do this.) |
 |
Search takes you to the form for searching for people. There are thirteen fields (Last Name, First Name, etc.) and up to seven options (contains, equals, starts with, ends with, exists, does not exist, soundex of and metaphone of). You can also search other fields by expanding the at the bottom of the list.
There are separate Support pages on Searching this site, with a section on searching for people, and Soundex. There is also a section on searching the web for names. |

Print is a useful function, and works differently from your printer settings. You can tell your printer not to print backgrounds, but TNG's print function also omits the web page header and footer. And to make it a tad confusing, your printer options may include printing/not printing "headers and footers" but these headers and footers are what your printer may put on your page - things like web address of the page you are printing, the date you printed it, etc. The illustration shows that the web page headers and footers have been omitted but the printer headers and footers have been printed.
Don't be fooled by what you see in the print pop-up window. First, >>Print<< in the top right hand corner is a button and does not appear on your printed page. Second, you will see that the header and footer have been removed, but any background colours (in tables and forms, for instance) are still there and you may not want to print them. It is your printer settings thsat will determine whether these print or not.
To change the print background settings, you need to Select >>Print<<. The settings you need are in the print dialogue box that appears:
Mac OS X: Under your browser's name, tick/untick Print backgrounds
Windows: The advice from Windows Help is that "the options that are available to you depend on the printer that you are using". [Maybe someone can give me some specifics here to help Windows users.]
BUT NOTE: When it comes to the charts in the person's pages (ancestors, descendants, relationships), you will need to configure your browser to print the background if you want to see the boxes and lines.
[The illustration at left is a scanned printed page (not the window you see when you select print) showing a person's page printed without "Do not print backgrounds" selected.] |

The Login/Logout button in both the Core Functions and the welcome message top right of every page will display the opposite of your current status - if you are logged in it will read Logout, if you are logged out it will read Login. There is a separate help page on logging in. |
 |
You can add the current page to your bookmarks by using the Add Bookmark function. You can find your bookmarks under the Find drop-down menu. The illustration at left shows a sample set of bookmarks. |
