    Notes
    • Some mysterious Jamaican Royes records, not likely to be Charles John Royes sr's children and birth place not identified.
A Samuel Royes, labourer, died in St Anns Bay, Jamaica on 13 May 1911 aged 86, therefore born about 1825.
A Thomas Royes, fisherman, died in St Anns Bay Parochial Hospital, Jamaica on 16 Dec 1878, aged 50, therefore born about 1828. [5]
    • Charles lived in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, owned a property "Windsor" and became fully involved in the life of the community:
c1851-1865+ various roles in St Ann's Savings Bank including Trustee (as was Joseph Bravo)
c1851-1865+ Lieutenant in St Anns Eastern militia (as was Joseph Bravo)
1855-1877 Custos (see below) of St Ann's Bay [1875 Michael Solomon is Acting Custos]
c1857-c1861 member of the Jamaican House of Assembly
      c1865-? Privy Council.
1871-77 St Ann Municipal Board (Chair)
1871-77 St Ann Road Board (Chair)
[CUSTOS ROTULORUM, Eng. law: The principal justice of the peace of a county, who is the keeper of the records of the county.]

      Extracts from The Falmouth Post
      Friday, January 17, 1873
(heading) The Custos of St. Ann’s and Justice Bruce
(text) The Honorable Charles Royes, Custos of St. Ann and Member of the Legislative Council, will submit Justice Bruce’s intemperate and unmerited censure [of him] to the consideration of Sir John Peter Grant, immediately after his arrival in the Island by the Packet.
      Friday February 21, 1873
      (heading) INTELLIGENCE FROM SPANISH TOWN
(sub-heading) The Coroner of St. Catherine
(text) There is a rumour abroad, that Mr. J. C. McAnuff, who signed the Address to the Honorable Charles Royes, condemnatory of Mr. Justice Bruce’s strictures on the character of that gentleman, is to be deprived of his office as Acting Coroner of St. Catherine, and that the Judge will employ Mr. Edward Claver Smith, senior, as his deputy.

Children: A Charles Thomas Royes was born 1849 in St Ann's Bay. He seems to have come from a different family (or they would surely have all been baptised on the same day):
Matilda - born Aug 1846 - baptism 30 Sep 1849 - residence Windsor (Charles' estate)
      Edward - born Sep 1848 - baptism 30 Sep 1849 - residence Windsor
      Charles T - born 27 Jan 1849 - baptism 28 Oct 1849 - residence St Ann's Bay

[Charles Thomas possibilities: Charles John snr's by a different mother?
son of Charles John jr now aged 16/17?
Is there another Royes here - a brother of Charles snr?]

Heather Royes writes: According to my father who loved to do historical research, when Emancipcation was declared in 1838, the slaves on Sir Charles Royes' estate refused to leave because they were well taken care of.

Charles' gravestone is located in a churchyard in St. Ann's Bay, in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica. It reads:
      Beneath this stone is laid
      the Honourable Charles John Royes,
      born September 18th 1813, died May 6th 1877.
He was Custos Rotulorum of this parish for 22 years,
representative in the House of Assembly for 8 years,
and a member of the Legislative Council
during a period of 7 years.

Information re: Charles John Royes' descendants via Charles John jnr comes from Charles Alan Royes, Jamaica

From Gillian Royes: [The family tradition is that] Charles John snr was married legally to an English woman who came out to Jamaica.  She had a child, who, I understand, died at three years of age.  The wife was bereft and returned to England.  Charles then took a "wife" (there are various theories about whether he married her legally or not, but I rather think not) who was a woman born in India who worked on his sugar cane estate.  Apparently, that's where we all come from in Jamaica.  Some of the children intermarried with former slaves, while others married very light-skinned blacks, mulattoes or quadroons.  The latter are known in Jamaica as the "white Royeses" and the former as the "black Royeses".  Samuel, my grandfather, was of the "white Royeses" and married a mulatto woman.  Colour and shade have always been very important in Jamaica, but less so now.

Charles snr does not appear in the 1841 UK Census (when he was aged 27-28). If Charles jr who appears in the Jamaican 1860 voter list (and is presumably at least 21 years of age) then he was born 1839 or earlier. If he was born in Jamaica, this gives us a migration date for Charles snr of "before 1839". If Charles John jr was born in Jamaica the date becomes "before 1832".

There is a partially completed website at http://royesfamily.com/family_tree.htm which may lead us to further information about Charles' descendants. I have added some of them tentatively. It lists children George Huntley and Adolphus as well as Edward and Charles John.
Also there are records of births for Edward and Matilda Royes resident on his property Windsor. There is also a Charles Thomas Royes born 27 Jan 1849 resident in St Ann's Bay but I suspect he is from a different family or from a different mother. Having two sons named Charles alive at the same time would be strange. [6, 7, 8]

    Notes
    • From Norman Cameron Moore (edited): Bravo had a great friend, Royce [Charles John Royes sr], who built a house and bought an estate Windsor at St. Anne's Bay for his wife and daughter, Doocie [Caroline Ada]. Royce's wife died and he sold Windsor to Bravo who gave it to his daughtter [Louise] and her husband [John R Cameron] and family. Doocie was brought up with the Cameron family and subsequently married a Scottish Militia Colonel [William] GUILD who had a "farm" at NORTH BERWICK (Castle Mains) where we went to visit when we lived in EDINBURGH. Willie and Doocie Guild had three children (Madge [Margaret de Hougham], Sybil, Royse [John Royes]).
