In the name of God Amen. I Solomon Hougham of Aldersgate Street, London and of Charterhouse Square in the county of Middlesex, merchant, being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding but considering the uncertainty of this transitory life do make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament I request that I may be buried in my family vault in St Botolph Aldersgate Church and I will and trust that all my just debts and funeral expenses with the charges of proving and executing this my will be fully paid and satisfied then I give and appoint unto my dear sister Sarah Royes of Canterbury for and during her natural life one clear annuity or yearly sum of One Hundred pounds of lawful British money to be paid to her in four quarterly payments viz. on the twenty-fifth day of March the twenty-fourth day of June the twenty-ninth day of September and the twenty-fifth day of December in every year the first payment thereof to be made upon such of the said dates of payment as shall first happen next after my decease and I will that the said annuity shall be free of all control of any husband which she now has or that she may have and her receipt alone shall be a proper discharge and I charge my two freehold houses to wit no 137 and 138 in Aldersgate Street with payment of the said annuity and I give unto my said sister the same powers of distress and entry for recovery of the said annuity in case the same shall be in arrear and unpaid as she would be entitled to by law for recovery of rents in arrear
I also give and bequeath the following legacies to wit
To my dear brother Henry Hougham of Tenterden, Kent, Surgeon, One Thousand pounds and if my said brother shall depart this life before he shall receive the said legacy of One Thousand pounds I direct the same to be divided equally between such of his children as shall be then living and I further give unto my said brothers children to wit to Josiah Hougham to Amelia Hougham to Eliza Huntley and to Ralph Hougham Three Hundred pounds each and to Mary Hougham junior Five Hundred pounds to Robert Harry Sparks of St John Street Middlesex according to my promise to his late wife Ann Sparks Three Thousand pounds to William Ward one of my journeymen Five Hundred pounds to John Yelloly of Finsbury Square Doctor of Physic one hundred pounds to Mary Royes to Samuel Tyssen and to Sophia his wife to Sarah Yelloly to Thomas Sparks the elder and to Robert Harry Sparks and to John Sparks twenty guineas each for a ring as a small token of my affectionate regard for them to Solomon Royes junior and to his sister Lydia Sanigear One Hundred pounds each to John East Dix if he shall be living in my partnership at the time of my decease One Thousand pounds to Aldersgate Ward Charity School One Hundred to the General Dispensary in Aldersgate Street Fifty pounds to twelve poor widows living in the parish of St Botolph Aldersgate Three pounds each to William xxx if living in my service in Aldersgate Street one Hundred pounds to each of my journeymen of seven years standing and upwards who at the time of my decease shall work in my factory in Aldersgate Street ...

Five guineas and to each of those under seven years standing Two guineas to each of my God children nineteen guineas to each of my downstair servants in Charterhouse Square mourning and further to Mary Brown for her long and faithful service sixty pounds to Eleanor Robinson nineteen guineas to Jonathan Crown thirty pounds and lastly I give and devise all my freehold estate to wit my two houses nos 137 and 138 in Aldersgate also my leasehold estate in Half Moon Court adjoining to my said freehold estate in Aldersgate Street also my leasehold dwelling house No 19 Charterhouse Square also my leasehold House in Grove Lane Camberwell and all the rest and residue of my estate and effects both real and personal whatsoever and wheresoever subject to the aforesaid annuity and testamentary bequests unto my nephew Solomon Royes the elder of Aldersgate Street, London, goldsmith his heirs executors administrators and assigns and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the aforesaid John xxx and the aforesaid Solomon Royes the elder executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other will and wills by me at anytime herebefor made and I do declare this to be my last will and testament in witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-third day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen

NB All the stock which at my death shall stand in my name as treasurer of the General Dispensary in the three percent reduced bank annuities is the property of the said General Dispensary and I direct the same to be immediately transferred into such names in trust for that charity as the committee shall appoint dated 23rd February 1818 Solomon Hougham
Appeared personally John East Dix of Aldersgate Street London goldsmith and Richard Smith of Basinghall Street London gentleman and made oath that they knew and were acquainted with Solomon Hougham late of Charterhouse Square London merchant deceased for sometime before and to the period of his death and have several times seen him write and write and subscribe his name to writings whereby they have acquired a knowledge of his manner and character of handwriting and subscription and having now viewed the paper writing hereunto annexed purporting to be and contain a codicil to the last will and testament of the said deceased the said codicil beginning thus NB all the stock which at my death shall stand in my name ending thus as the committee shall appoint dated 23rd February 1818 and thus subscribed Solomon Hougham
