658 Bithynia - ancient district in northwestern Anatolia, adjoining the Sea of Marmara, the Bosporus, and the Black Sea, thus occupying an important and precarious position between East and West. Late in the 2nd millennium BC, Bithynia was occupieied by warlike tribes of Thracian origin who harried Greek settlers and Persian envoys alike. Their remarkable pugnacity kept them from complete Persian domination after the 6th century; in addition, they never submitted to Alexander the Great or his Seleucid successors. By the 3rd century BC the small but powerful state had evolved from tribal government to Hellenistic kingship and reached the height of its power early in the 2nd century BC. There followed a century of inept leadership and rapid decline. Bithynia's last king, Nicomedes IV, little more than a Roman puppet, bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans in 74 BC.

663 BOOK: Emma: The Twice-Crowned Queen: England in the Viking Age by Isabella Strachan. The first full biography of Queen Emma.
[ISABELLA STRACHAN is a former staff writer and sub-editor on the Encyclopaedia Britannica.]
In 1002, a beautiful eighteen-year-old named Emma, the half-Danish sister of the Duke of Normandy and the descendant of the Vikings, sailed to England to be the queen of Ethelred the Unready, who needed a Norman alliance against Viking raiders. The political and marital career on which Emma embarked was to be unique for an English queen. Before it was over she would have married two kings, Ethelred and the Danish Canute, and would have given birth to two more, Edward the Confessor and Hardecanute.
If Ethelred showed little interest in Emma, her second marriage was scarcely happier. Canute remained joined in a 'handfast' union (one without the Church's full approval) to Elgiva, his first love and the mother of several of his children.
From her home in Winchester, the Saxon capital, Emma operated as a significant political figure in her own right. Her writings suggest that she was a Danish nationalist who wished to see England joined with Viking Denmark. But, ultimately, it was her great-nephew, William the Conqueror, who would decide the destiny of England in 1066.
Emma's queenship stood at the meeting point of three cultures of the early Middle Ages in England: Saxon, Viking and Norman. This study of her reign, based on contemporary writings and the work of modern scholars, provides a captivating picture of a pious yet brutal era.

753 Charles John snr. helped Charles jnr. to acquire  the Knapdale property which he later sold and bought a property near Riversdale where he cultivated bananas for export. Apparently mosquitos and malaria became a problem in that area and the next generation moved to Kingston. However note that his obit says "late of Knapdale".

A Charles Royes jr is listed on the Register of Voters for St Ann's in 1860.

A Charles John is listed as b1858-d1860 on http://royesfamily.com/family_tree.htm but is probably Charles Mordaunt Royes (1858-c1860)

Obit from The Daily Gleaner 8 Nov 1905:
Royes At 5.30 p.m. yesterday at "Devereux Ville" (NW corner Waterloo and Windward Roads)  Charles John Royes, late of Knapdale, St Ann, in his 74th year.  Funeral will move for May Pen Cemetery this evening at 4.30 punctually.

[CUSTOS ROTULORUM, Eng. law: The principal justice of the peace of a county, who is the keeper of the records of the county.]

Extracts from The Falmouth Post
Friday, January 17, 1873
(heading) The Custos of St. Ann's and Justice Bruce
(text) The Honorable Charles Royes, Custos of St. Ann and Member of the Legislative Council, will submit Justice Bruce's intemperate and unmerited censure [of him] to the consideration of Sir John Peter Grant, immediately after his arrival in the Island by the Packet.
Friday February 21, 1873
(heading) INTELLIGENCE FROM SPANISH TOWN
(sub-heading) The Coroner of St. Catherine
(text) There is a rumour abroad, that Mr. J. C. McAnuff, who signed the Address to the Honorable Charles Royes, condemnatory of Mr. Justice Bruce's strictures on the character of that gentleman, is to be deprived of his office as Acting Coroner of St. Catherine, and that the Judge will employ Mr. Edward Claver Smith, senior, as his deputy.

Children: A Charles Thomas Royes was born 1849 in St Ann's Bay. He seems to have come from a different family (or they would surely have all been baptised on the same day):
Matilda - born Aug 1846 - baptism 30 Sep 1849 - residence Windsor (Charles' estate)
Edward - born Sep 1848 - baptism 30 Sep 1849 - residence Windsor
Charles T - born 27 Jan 1849 - baptism 28 Oct 1849 - residence St Ann's Bay

[Charles Thomas possibilities: Charles John snr's by a different mother?
son of Charles John jr now aged 16/17?
Is there another Royes here - a brother of Charles snr?]

Heather Royes writes: According to my father who loved to do historical research, when Emancipcation was declared in 1838, the slaves on Sir Charles Royes' estate refused to leave because they were well taken care of.

Charles' gravestone is located in a churchyard in St. Ann's Bay, in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica. It reads:
Beneath this stone is laid
the Honourable Charles John Royes,
born September 18th 1813, died May 6th 1877.
He was Custos Rotulorum of this parish for 22 years,
representative in the House of Assembly for 8 years,
and a member of the Legislative Council
during a period of 7 years.

Information re: Charles John Royes' descendants via Charles John jnr comes from Charles Alan Royes, Jamaica
-----
From Gillian Royes: [The family tradition is that] Charles John snr was married legally to an English woman who came out to Jamaica. She had a child, who, I understand, died at three years of age. The wife was bereft and returned to England. Charles then took a "wife" (there are various theories about whether he married her legally or not, but I rather think not) who was a woman born in India who worked on his sugar cane estate. Apparently, that's where we all come from in Jamaica. Some of the children intermarried with former slaves, while others married very light-skinned blacks, mulattoes or quadroons. The latter are known in Jamaica as the "white Royeses" and the former as the "black Royeses". Samuel, my grandfather, was of the "white Royeses" and married a mulatto woman. Colour and shade have always been very important in Jamaica, but less so now.

Charles snr does not appear in the 1841 UK Census (when he was aged 27-28). If Charles jr who appears in the Jamaican 1860 voter list (and is presumably at least 21 years of age) then he was born 1839 or earlier. If he was born in Jamaica, this gives us a migration date for Charles snr of "before 1839". If Charles John jr was born in Jamaica the date becomes "before 1832".

There is a partially completed website at http://royesfamily.com/family_tree.htm [no longer active - try https://theroyesfamily.com ] which may lead us to further information about Charles' descendants. I have added some of them tentatively. It lists children George Huntley and Adolphus as well as Edward and Charles John.
Also there are records of births for Edward and Matilda Royes resident on his property Windsor. There is also a Charles Thomas Royes born 27 Jan 1849 resident in St Ann's Bay but I suspect he is from a different family or from a different mother. Having two sons named Charles alive at the same time would be strange.

Gone 1752
This makes his date of birth in the early 1690s or earlier, his daughters born when he was about 37-42, and he dies about 61+. “Gone” is clearly after his death but may be an “administrative date”.
