    1. [S472] Correspondence re: Selby.
This refers to my late father, Hugh Curran Selby who was married to Rose Logan. He served throughout the war from 1914-1918, and at the battle of the Somme his older brother Joe ( after whom I am named ) was killed beside him.
In September 1918 my Dad was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal which at that time for his rank ( C.Q.M.S.) was second only to the Victoria Cross, and the citation reads :-
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Dadizeele on September 30, 1918. Owing to the exposed position of his Company, he got the mules as close as possible, and personally carried bags of rations through the heaviest fire to his Company. His self-awareness on behalf of his Company was beyond praise"
As a matter of interest, his modesty, so typical of WW1 personnel. was such that he would never tell me why he was decorated, and it was only many years after his death that I learnt the facts.
