    • Lindsay Robertson (NZ) writes:
David Bower was one of the first horticulturalists who arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand. He became quite well-known in his field. The "royal oak" tree in the Dunedin gardens was planted to celebrate the royal marriage between the Prince of Wales and the Danish Princess Alexandra in 1863. David Bower carried it to the site and planted it as part of the proceedings. Some of us (his descendants) have saplings from that tree provided by the Gardens! One of David Bower's daughters, Helen Hogg Hair (née Bower) was my maternal ggrandmother. While many of her family stayed in Otago, mainly near Balclutha, she travelled to Gisborne as a young woman. She married in Gisborne, had 8 children and died (her husband having already died at 40) leaving children as young as 6. My grandmother Gladys was second youngest at 8 and was shipped off to an elderly Aunt in Dunedin who had married late in life and had no children. Gladys had four children in Dunedin, of whom my mother Joyce Robertson nee Dryden was second eldest. We, the next generation were also born and grew up in Dunedin.
We know very little of why Helen Hogg Bower moved to Gisborne, and we are not aware of contact with other Bowers in the North Island (including Charlotte). [1]
