Joined the RIC in 1847 at the age of 23 (no. 8874 height 5 feet 5 1/2 inches) and served in Cork, West Riding and later in Co Wexford. He was pensioned off on 16 March 1877. Members of the RIC could not marry until they had served 7 years and even then only with the approval of their superiors. However no record of Daniel’s marriage appears on his service record. Upon joining he gave his occupation as “labourer”.
