Death of Edward Hougham Royes The text reads (verbatim):
ROYES. - On the 23rd instant, at the residence of her son-in-law, Denham Street, Rockhampton, Edward Hugham Royes, only brother of the Hon. Charles John Royes, Windsor Castle, Jamaica and uncle of Dr Royes Bell, London, and father of Mrs. Alexander Henry, of Rockhampton. Aged 72 years. - Sydney and home papers please copy.
[NOTES:
1. Edward was not the only brother of Charles John Royes (who had in fact died the year before, but the Australian family seem to be unaware of that) but he may have been the only surviving brother. In which case he was the last surviving son of Solomon and Mary Royes.
2. "Mr. Alexander Henry" is a misprint - elsewhere it is Mrs. Alex... Which daughter married Alexander Henry? probably Eleanor?] |
Buried |
23 Aug 1878 |
South Rockhampton, QLD, Australia [8] |
Age: 62 |
Cause: asthma |
- Presbyterian, Section 3 Grave 355 - listed as aged 63
|
Notes |
- He uses "Mordaunt" as the second name of one of his sons, who in turn continues this usage with two of his sons. This probably indicates an awareness of the family pedigree - his great grandmother was a Mordaunt [9]
- Correspondent Diane Gwilliams suggests that the reason Edward Hougham Royes senior and others went to Australia was because of their links with Sir Joseph Banks:
Given the close proximity of Samuel Tyssen to Joseph Banks, and the fact that Solomon Royes the silversmith's uncle Solomon Hougham was Samuel Tyssen's sister Sarah's signatory on her wedding certificate to John Yelloly in 1806, it is possible that they were influenced by tales of adventure. Indeed, Solomon Royes the silversmith may well have known Joseph Banks as the dates tie (Solomon Royes before 1774-1842.... Joseph Banks 1743-1820)

 | 1700 ROYES The earliest known Royes - John We had previously identified John Royes 1752-1832 as our earliest Royes. We then identified his father as William Royes - no information about birth or marriage.
We have information that a William Royes was born in 1723 in Lincolnshire. But John 1752 was born in, worked, married and died in Canterbury, Kent. So this link is uncertain though not impossible. Lincolnshire William's wife is Sarah Taylor and his parents were John and Mary Royes. |
 | Australian Royes pedigree Based on Edward Hougham Royes who migrated to Australia in 1838. His earliest known Royes ancestor is John Royes born about 1700. |
