Logan-Clements Family History 4: The Houston Family

From Greenock, Scotland to Ulster around the turn of the seventeenth century
by Mary Semple, in 1919

The founder of this family was Hugh Houston, born in Greenock, Scotland, who received a large grant of land from King James Stuart [presumably James VI of Scotland who was also James I of England].

His son, Captain John Houston, was married to Margaret Shaw, daughter of James Shaw and his wife Isabella Brisbane of Ballygally Castle, between Larne and Glenarm. Captain Houston and Miss Shaw were married in Templepatrick on April 17th, 1648.

The descendants of this family are many - among them are

  • the Earl of Charlemont in County Armagh,
  • Houston's of Orangefield, Co. Down,
  • Houston's of Ballyearl, Carnmoney,
  • Houston's of Ballysnod and Ballyboley.
  • Sir Hugh Houston Smiley of Drumalis, Larne, Co. Antrim, was second cousin to the late Houston Clements of Larne, (our grandfather).

This information was secured through the kindness of Mary Semple, Mounthill, Larne, Co. Antrim, July 29th, 1919.
